East Claydon Storage's planning application is being appealed and will be subject to a Hearing by the Planning Inspectorate under appeal reference Appeal Ref: APP/J0405/W/25/3360815. The Hearing date is scheduled for the 22nd July 2025. Details of which can be found via the Council's appeal page or the Planning Inspectorate website.

Batteries are a fundamental energy storage technology used across a range of applications. The lithium-ion batteries found in smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles are the most widely known. However, on a larger scale, battery energy storage systems (BESS) provide energy services to the country, by storing excess energy from the grid and releasing it back when required.

Our vision
The East Claydon Storage project is a 500MW battery energy storage scheme connecting directly into the National Grid substation.
By connecting to the National Grid transmission network East Claydon Storage will be able to play a fundamental role in providing energy security to the UK. Once operational the site would have the potential to power up 540,000 homes with clean electricity. Playing an important role in meeting the Government's net zero targets.

The challenge
Climate Change is driving the need for an urgent reduction in carbon emissions. As a result, the UK Government has committed to a decarbonised electricity network by 2030 and a net zero economy by 2050.
One of the critical challenges we face in this transition is the need to balance the electricity grid. Ensuring we have sufficient supply to meet demand at all periods of the year - every second of every minute of every hour of every day. In a renewable led future, wind will be our dominant source of power generation. Yet wind is volatile and intermittent and does not always match demand.
In a renewable energy led future, the challenge comes from matching energy supply with demand.
One of the critical challenges we face in this transition is the need to balance the electricity grid. The opportunity
Energy storage is key to resolving this challenge and harnessing excess energy to be used at times when it's required. To work effectively the UK energy network needs different technologies which can work in unison to supply and balance the National Grid.
East Claydon Storage will be able to help the National Grid balance the daily fluctuations caused by the intermittent nature of renewables by storing excess energy within the lithium-ion cells. BESS facilities provide a short-term storage solution, by storing and exporting electricity to the National Grid when required.
Located at a strategic grid supply point north of London, East Claydon Storage would provide a meaningful contribution to the UK's energy transition.

The site
The Proposed Development site is located to the south east of the existing East Claydon National Grid substation.
The entirety of the Proposed Development will be located within the administrative area of Buckinghamshire Council.

Who is Statera?
Statera is a UK-based energy company that develops, owns and operates flexible generation, battery storage, pumped storage hydro and green hydrogen projects which will all provide critical grid balancing support in a future renewables-led system.
These assets will help the UK build more renewable energy, more quickly, by providing the flexible capacity needed to balance the future grid during periods of extended shortfalls and excesses in renewable generation, due to the variability of wind and solar output.
